Technical Luncheon Oct. 21, 2009
Topic: CHOPS Without Sand – Another Step Closer
Speaker: Brian Wagg, Manager, New Technology Initiatives, C-FER Technologies
Bio:
Brian is a graduate from the University of Waterloo in Geological Engineering.
He has worked in heavy oil operations for many years, first as an operator on a
co-op work term for Mobil at the Gully Lake field near Maidstone. Brian joined
C-FER in 1990 and has worked on a variety of heavy oil projects including using
produced sand to make Portland cement, developing new tank cleaning equipment,
designing new sucker rod connections for PC-Pumps and testing methods to
pipeline heavy oil without diluents. He is now Manager of C-FER’s New
Technologies Initiatives Department and is looking at new ways to make heavy oil
operations more cost effective.
Abstract:
Most people agree that cold heavy oil production (CHOPS) means that you’re going
to produce sand. And lots of it. A new process called SuperSump takes full
advantage of the CHOPS process but eliminates the costs associated with handling
and disposing of produced sand by diverting the sand directly into a cavern
below the reservoir. C-FER and Distinct Resources will present a variety of
technical and economic assessments that demonstrate the viability of the
SuperSump process and pave the way for a field trial of the process.
