March 12, 2003 Development of a Standard for Progressing Cavity Pumping Systems Surface DrivesABSTRACT: A group of manufacturers of surface drives for progressing cavity pumping (PCP) systems is currently developing an industry standard for this equipment. The purpose of the standard is to provide guidelines for designing, specifying and using surface drives and to ensure acceptable levels of safety in the operation of this equipment. This presentation will describe the safety issues associated with this equipment that are addressed by the standard. Biography: Brian Wagg has worked in the Production Technology Department at C-FER for the past 12 years. A graduate of the Geological Engineering program at the University of Waterloo, Brian has been involved in a variety of projects related to heavy oil operations including produced sand management, sucker rod and elastomer testing for progressing cavity pumping systems and assessments of heavy oil gathering systems. Currently he is a member of an international industry committee developing an ISO standard for surface drives for progressing cavity pumping systems.
