Nexen’s Bitumen Project

Bob Batt, Sr. Reservoir Engineer

Nexen Canada Ltd.

ABSTRACT:

The Long Lake Project is the first field integration of bitumen recovery and upgrading. It is a unique solution to three fundamental problems which afflict thermal recovery operations: widely fluctuating heavy oil differentials, high fuel cost for steam generation and reliance on diluent to transport the product to market. The Long Lake project will produce a light sweet synthetic crude from Athabasca bitumen utilizing bottoms from the upgrader as the primary source of upgrader hydrogen and SAGD fuel.  The project is currently in the regulatory review stage. Construction of a 70,000 bpd SAGD facility and a 70,000 bpd upgrader is planned to commence in late 2003 with production in 2006.
